About the role
The Promotions Platform Lead owns the functional and technical direction of Wondersoft's enterprise promotions engine,
which calculates offers, discounts and pricing for retail chains at the point of sale. This is a hands-on role that combines
product ownership, solution architecture and engineering leadership: the lead defines how complex promotion scenarios
should behave, designs the solution, guides and reviews the code, and takes technical charge of production issues
What you will do
- Own the functional and technical roadmap for the promotions platform; convert complex retail promotion
- requirements into specifications, business rules and acceptance criteria.
- Define expected behaviour for complex scenarios — stacking, priority, exclusions, free products, special pricing and
- discount blocking — and assess impact on existing customers.
- Design solutions across the application, rule-engine, database, API and integration layers; drive reusable components
- over customer-specific code, legacy modernisation and technical-debt reduction.
- Guide and review development in Java, Drools, Hibernate and REST services; troubleshoot complex defects that span
- components.
- Lead performance investigations — JVM memory, connection pooling, slow queries, rule-engine behaviour — and
- ensure the design scales on clustered, multi-node deployments.
- Review authentication, SSO, token handling and encryption across the platform and its integrations.
- Lead critical production incidents and root-cause analysis; turn recurring issues into permanent fixes.
- Work with QA on test coverage and regression risk for discount calculations; support release readiness.
- Plan and prioritise delivery across development and QA; mentor engineers and testers on promotion logic and
- architecture.
What you will bring
- 10–15 years of hands-on enterprise Java development, including architecture of high-volume transactional
- applications.
- Hands-on experience with a rule engine (Drools preferred), Hibernate/JPA, REST APIs and enterprise integrations.
- Strong SQL and database performance tuning on MySQL, MariaDB or SQL Server.
- Application-server architecture (Tomcat), clustered / multi-node deployments and JVM diagnostics.
- Working knowledge of authentication, authorisation and SSO.
- Proven production RCA and incident leadership; able to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience in a software product company is preferred over IT services.
Nice to have
- Retail promotions, pricing, loyalty or POS domain experience.
- JSP, JavaScript and React; Jenkins-based CI/CD.
- Effective use of AI-assisted coding tools (e.g. Claude Code) with independent validation of their output.
What we offer
- Opportunity to lead the technical and functional direction of an enterprise-grade Promotions Platform.
- Hands-on ownership of complex retail pricing, promotions and discounting solutions used by large retail chains.
- Opportunity to work across product ownership, solution architecture and engineering leadership.
- Exposure to high-volume, transactional systems deployed across cloud, data centre and store environments.
- Leadership role with significant ownership of architecture, scalability, performance and production reliability.
- Opportunity to drive legacy modernization, reusable architecture and technical-debt reduction.
- Collaborative environment working closely with development, QA, product and business stakeholders.
- Opportunity to mentor engineers and influence engineering standards and best practices.
- Exposure to modern AI-assisted development tools and engineering practices.
- Stable product-company environment with opportunities for long-term technical and leadership growth.
